John Knox Presbyterian Church was founded on November 4, 1956 among newly developing neighborhoods on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina. The sermon that first Sunday was entitled “The Church of Our Dreams,” and offered inspiration to the new charter members to lay a foundation for what would be a continuing journey -- the life of the church.
Through the decades, as John Knox’s Shannon Drive campus grew, so did the membership, programs, and ministry. From Asia to South America; Africa to Central America; and at home, the church has always had an eye towards mission. At the same time, it has provided a welcoming atmosphere and sense of place for worshiping families from that day in 1956 through this Sunday. This atmosphere of openness and assimilation has allowed the church to grow and prosper in pursuit of “The Church of Our Dreams.”
A full history of John Knox Church was published in 2006 as part of the Fiftieth Anniversary celebration. Copies of the history book are available for purchase in the church office.
